SPRINGFIELD PLUMBING Robert Springfield isn't one to back down from a challenge. After studying plumbing in high school and finishing at the top of his trade school class, he became a Master Plumber at just 23 years old. The problem was, he couldn't find a job with an existing plumbing company. So, he started his own business and Springfield Plumbing Company was born in 1985. As a commercial plumber, some of Springfield's customers include local banks, the Jefferson County Public Schools, University of Louisville, and local Fire Departments. Currently, Springfield Plumbing is involved in the Home of the Innocents Project in Louisville. Robert is quick to point out that KMSDC has had an impact on that project. "There's never been a project that has had more minority businesses involved," he says. As Project Manager, Robert does his own bidding and estimating - and that fact makes a big difference. Robert is involved in all aspects of a job - whether it's initial estimates on materials or labor, building design or plumbing, he's involved every step of the way. This helps him evaluate a job and ensure his customer's deadlines are being met. Kim Springfield is Vice-President and handles the administrative and bookkeeping aspects of the business. Although Robert started in the business in high school, he notes that today's educational focus is moving away from Trade Schools, which makes it sometimes hard to find qualified workers. His employees start as a laborer and go through a four-year apprenticeship program. They currently have 8 full-time employees and are a Union Shop. The office is located in Louisville's West End to help keep an identity in the area. Robert's wealth
of knowledge of the plumbing business and his years of experience are
essential in managing the frustrations associated with getting the job
done. Because he knows what should be done, he's able to ensure that
the jobs are completed on time - and that is what makes the difference!
